Tattoo Community Revels in Freedom of Expression Ruling

After four years of battling a Key West ordinance that prevented our owner Brad Buehrle from opening a second tattoo shop, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of  protecting tattooing under the First Amendment. This case sets the precedent that tattooing is a protected form of artistic expression that cannot so easily be discriminated against by local governments. We are ecstatic to be a part of this monumental ruling that will hopefully protect tattooists and their businesses from outdated stereotypes and social intolerance. Furthermore, we are hopeful that protecting tattooing as a form of artistic expression will lead to greater acceptance of tattoos in the workplace. As the craft of tattooing becomes more mainstream and accessible to people from different walks of life, we are excited to see how this decision effects the future of the industry.

As we celebrate this victory we must take a moment to reflect on all of the tattoo and piercing enthusiasts that have kept our doors open over the years. Thank you to all of the clients who have supported us! While Key West may have attempted to shut us out, we cannot be more thrilled with how vibrant, creative, and accepting our Richmond home continues to be. We have been able to expand our shop twice since opening in 2003 and are now 13 tattoo artists strong. We look forward to improving our shop Richmond shop for our customers even more in the coming years and can’t wait to see how we can grow in other ways. In 2016 look for more shop renovations, new guest artists, and a convention schedule detailing the travels of some of our resident artists.

Please share the news of this court case to raise awareness for the imminent changes that will be impacting the tattoo community!

“Eddie Munster” Visits Lucky 13 for Voodoo Fest Pre-Sale Event

Join the Lucky 13 crew at 1800 W. Broad Street on October 7 for a Richmond Voodoo Festival ticket pre-sale event with Butch Patrick, aka “Eddie Munster,” from the 60′s satire sitcom, The Munsters. Collect an autographed event poster or pose with the macabre Munster hotrods, Drag-U-La and the Munster Koach while we gear you up for Halloween weekend! The Munster Koach, a hotrod built on a lengthened 1926 Ford Model T, is combined with the body of a hearse to make for an eccentric pre-Halloween photo-op. Meanwhile, the The Drag-U-La is a dragster built from a real coffin!  We will be selling advance tickets for the First Annual Richmond Voodoo Festival at The Broadberry for only $7 from 12-4-pm. The festival includes music from hardcore legends Murphy’s Law, local rock n’ roll acts The HellHounds and Octane Saints, as well as the New Jersey rock group The Cryptkeeper Five. A haunted attraction will be erected in the adjacent parking lot by Red Vein Army and ScreamFreak.com while costumed actors mingle through the crowds. A costume contest with cash prize, t-shirt giveaways, as well as band merchandise tables and vendors like Rest in Pieces will round out the evening. We look forward to seeing you!

Staff Expansion

Hello everyone! As you know we have expanded our shop and our staff over the last few months by renovating our studio space as well as taking on two new tattooers, Sara Bell and Matt Nemeth. As the demands of our client base grow, we have decided to add an additional member to our family in the form of a part-time receptionist. I am looking to hire an enthusiastic and professional candidate who is able to work Mondays and Tuesdays from 11am-9pm. There will be opportunity for additional shifts in the future, but the current opening is for 20 work hours. The ideal applicant is mature, an articulate speaker, organized, able to multi-task in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment, punctual, and good humored. Reliable transportation is mandatory and so is a positive attitude and sense of humor. Please inquire within or call the shop to see when interviews will be held. Additional information will be updated on our Facebook feed.

Thank you for looking and I look forward to meeting you!

-Dana
